井戸カフェ・井戸マンション

「カリーズ」というと、何か新規な事柄かと思ってしまうが、なんのことはない高校時代に地理で学んだ「カナート」のこと。
アフガニスタンやパキスタンあたりではカリーズと呼ぶらしい。
砂漠地帯の「地下水道」で紀元前から存在し、長さ数十キロにおよびものがあるという。
カナートは古代ペルシャ帝国の繁栄の根幹に存在していた。
それにくらべると、わが神田上水や玉川上水などは文字通り「ひよっこ」の類。

でカリーズだが、南麻布仙台坂下に「カフェ・カリーズ」という「400年前」つまり仙台藩下屋敷時代の井戸の水を使ってお茶をたてている喫茶店がある、という記事を仙台市のサイトでみつけた。
こちらも仙台藩士の末裔だし、井戸は現今の主題であるので、ともかくも行ってみた。

「地下水コーヒー」の旗が立つ、ガラス張りの新しいお店。
同年配と思しきママさんは、おしゃべりな若者を相手にしていたが、こちらを向くと「テレビで見たの？」とのたまう。
何度もテレビ取材を受けているらしい。
「テレビは棄てたので」というと、何やら不要領な顔。
ともかくもお茶を頼んで、床面のガラス下に見える井戸を撮影させてもらった。

紅茶は香り高く、結構おいしい。
注意すると床ガラス窓の貼紙に「伊達政宗下屋敷の湧水井戸　麻布の地下水　This spring water has been flowing from underground for over 400years」とある。
現韓国大使館敷地を含む南麻布の一画が仙台藩の「麻布本村屋敷」となったのは1661年であるから、1636年に死去した藩祖の名を出されても困るし、井戸も400年はオーバーにすぎる・・・。

店内を見まわしていると、ママさんに自家製らしい印刷物（無料）を勧められた。
手に取れば、六本木・麻布を中心にした各国大使館案内地図である。
ただし右下に「文明の恥じ（ﾏﾏ）とは何か」というコラム記事入りで、そこで老子とレーニンと荒尾精を並列推奨しているのには恐れ入りました。
裏面はさらに念が入って、タイトルに「日本の近代・現代160年を辿る」とある。
店名の由来、参勤交代、何故麻布に大使館が多いのか、産業革命と植民地から黒船来航までが日英両文並記。
下辺欄外に「老いの青春音読の勧め」（￥350）、「認知症の家庭対策SOSリング」（価格表示なし）の広告入りである。

支払いの折に井戸について尋ねたが、結局以下のようなことらしい。
この地所はお連れ合いの自邸敷地で、8年前にビルに建て替えるときに掘ったら井戸が出てきた。
その水を使って、カフェは8年前からやっている。
かつての家の裏手には大きな古井戸があった。
建替で埋めたが、神主を頼んだ。
使っている井戸の水面は地表下10メートルで、水深は不明。
台風などの大雨時には井戸口から水が溢れるという。

なぜ「カナート」でなく「カリーズ」としたのかは、訊き洩らした。

ネット検索では、ビルの名は「サライ南麻布」、2010年1月竣工。
10階建ての高級賃貸マンションで、18戸が入居している。
カフェやちらし、貼紙のことはさておき、案ずるに、「サライ南麻布」は入居者にとってまことに心強い「（防災）井戸付マンション」なのである。
