天生峠

「参謀本部編纂の地図をまた繰開（くりひら）いて見るでもなかろう、と思ったけれども、余りの道じゃから、手を触（さわ）るさえ暑くるしい、旅の法衣（ころも）の袖をかかげて、表紙を附けた折本になってるのを引張り出した。
飛騨から信州へ越える深山（みやま）の間道で、ちょうど立休らおうという一本の樹立（こだち）も無い、右も左も山ばかりじゃ、手を伸ばすと達（とど）きそうな峰があると、その峰へ峰が乗り、巓（いただき）が被（かぶ）さって、飛ぶ鳥も見えず、雲の形も見えぬ。
道と空との間にただ一人我ばかり、およそ正午と覚しい極熱の太陽の色も白いほどに冴え返った光線を、深々と戴いた一重の檜笠に凌いで、こう図面を見た。」・・・

冒頭から「参謀本部の地図」が登場する近代日本文学の名品は、ご存知、泉鏡花の『高野聖』。

「さあ、これからが名代（なだい）の天生（あもう）峠と心得たから、こっちもその気になって、何しろ暑いので、喘（あえ）ぎながらまず草鞋（わらじ）の紐（ひも）を緊直（しめなお）した。」

旅の高僧が同宿の若者に、おのれの若き折の体験を物語るという形式をとった、おどろおどろしいストーリーのはじめの方、魔境の女性と出逢う直前に、主人公が山蛭に襲われるのは岐阜県北部の「天生峠」（あもうとうげ）。
大野郡白川村と飛騨市との境にあるその峠の標高は1280ｍ。庄川支流の白川と、神通川（岐阜県内では宮川みやがわという）の支流小鳥（おどり）川の分水界に相当する。

この作品は明治33年（1900）に『新小説』に発表されたのですが、「参謀本部編纂の地図」とあれば、まずは日本陸軍「誉（ほまれ）の五万分一図」、つまり明治23年（1890）から作製が開始され大正5年（1916）に全国整備が完了した列島1000枚以上におよぶ、一群の地形図のことを指しているのではないかと、誰しも考えるでしょう。

もしそうだとすると、該当する地形図は金沢3号の「白川村」のはず。しかし、図歴によれば、この図の初測は明治43年（1910）で、発行が大正2年（1913）3月だから、作中の地図が5万分の1の地形図であった可能性はにわかに消失してしまう。

    泉鏡花の記す「天生峠」は、「飛騨から信州へ越える深山（みやま）の間道で」という表現からすれば、天生峠と安房峠を混同したものではないでしょうか。その混同が故意なのかどうかは知りません。明治33年以前に「安房峠」の載る陸軍測地部の地図は出版されていたのでしょうか（自分で調べればいいのですが）？　もし出ていたとすれば、鏡花が単に峠の名前を間違えただけ、ということもありうるように思います。
