洗足池　その3

前回みた縦断勾配8.3％の坂は、1923年（大正12）に建立された「中原街道改修記念碑」の「沼部石川千束等ノ急坂」のうち沼部の坂である。
古い坂はどのように改修されたかを、下掲の地形図で確かめてみよう。

左右のうち左は前回同様、右図は1万分の1地形図「自由が丘」と「武蔵小杉」（いずれも1984年編集）の一部であるが、説明の必要上、左右の同位置に赤いピンを刺し加えてある。
ピンの位置には、現在「桜橋」として知られている跨道橋が存在する。鋼製高欄は赤く塗装され、その上に花が被さる時節には、普段とはうって変わって遠来の老若男女が渡る橋である。2000年にリリースされ大ヒットした福山雅治の「桜坂」の影響だが、20年後の来春はさてどんな人出となるか知らぬ。

右図すなわち1万分の1地形図で道を横切る10メートルと20メートルの等高線間隔は約30ミリメートルである。水平距離約300メートルに対する10メートルの高低差であるから、桜坂の平均傾斜角は約1.9度、道路縦断勾配は3.3％、つまり左図の傾斜は右図の半減以下と言うことができる。ただし標高20メートルの等高線は、桜橋の南西側30メートルのあたりを通っている。

現「桜坂」について、大田区のサイトの説明をみてみよう。

「東急多摩川線沼部駅から東光院前を通り北東へ向かうと、田園調布本町19番あたりから石垣にはさまれた切通しの坂道になります。これが桜坂で、坂名は坂道の両側に大正時代に植えられた桜にちなむものです。
この坂は旧中原街道の切通しで、昔は「沼部の大坂」といい、勾配がきつく荷車などの通行は大変であったようです。また、かつてこのあたりの村落（沼部の村落）は荷車、旅商人の往来でにぎわい、腰掛け茶屋などが坂道の両側にあったともいわれています。
坂下には、かつて六郷用水が流れていたましたが、下水道の普及につれ、この用水も埋められました。しかし、少しでも昔の姿を残そうと、その一部を自然の湧水を使って「六郷用水の跡」とし、現在は保存しています。」

以上は「田園調布・嶺町地域の坂道」にあるもので、更新日は2016年4月1日である。
1行目の「田園調布本町19番」とは、上掲右図の右端中ほど「田園調布本町」の「調」の文字がその斜め底辺の一角にかかる1ブロックで、「調」の文字がまたがる道と旧中原街道の交差地点には「さくら坂」信号がある。
「桜坂」は、この信号から約190メートル北西の「さくら坂上」信号までと言い（坂学会「東京23区の坂」）、wikipedia「桜坂」でもほぼ同様としている。
これらをGoogle Mapで確認すると、2つの交差点信号のほぼ中央、それはおそらく坂名の標柱の位置だろうが「桜坂」と記し、坂下、さくら坂信号と東急多摩川線の間の旧中原街道に「桜坂通り」と記入している。
桜坂は「両側に植えられた桜」にちなみその範囲を言うのだから、桜坂は桜坂通りの一部ということになる。

左図の等高線で読み取れる旧「沼部の大坂」は、現「桜坂通り」から現「さくら坂」信号に一部かかるあたりで、「桜坂」の大部分は切通し工事以前は段丘の平坦面であることがわかる。つまり現在の「桜坂」と「沼部の大坂」は、実はそれぞれ位置が異なると言ってもよいのであって、現在の「桜坂通り」には「沼部坂」（旧「沼部の大坂」にちなんでこう呼んでおく）と「桜坂」の2つの坂が存在していると考えたほうがよい。

右の地形図は等高線が切り通しの崖記号に吸収され、そこから現在の2つの坂を比較計測することは不可能なので、スマホアプリ「スーパー地形　カシミール3D」を利用し、「桜坂通り」のほぼ中央を通る線から、それぞれの坂の平均数値を導き出し以下に掲げておく。おもに段丘面を通る等高線に対して、「溝状に掘り下げられた道筋＝坂」の傾斜を地図上から知るには、これがもっとも手近な方法だからである。
Aは上掲左図で坂下の六郷用水に架かっていた橋からさくら坂交差点信号まで（沼部坂）、Bはさくら坂交差点信号からさくら坂上交差点信号まで（桜坂）とする。

A「沼部坂」　水平距離221m　高低差7.59m　傾斜角1.967度　道路縦断勾配3.43%
B「桜　坂」　水平距離187m　高低差6.75m　傾斜角2.067度　道路縦断勾配3.61%

このABふたつの坂は「沼部の大坂」を削平して造り出されたものだが、とりわけ「桜坂」の大部分は高位の平坦面を掘り下げたため、溝あるいは樋状の形が顕著で、その両側の堤の部分に桜並木は植えられたのである。

時代が最近に下れば下るほど、坂は、面（斜面）ではなく線（傾斜経路）と捉えねばならない場合が多くなる。それは「道」の役割が、（foot) pathから車輛を主体としたroadへそしてwayへと変容し、それに対応して施工も法令もリフォーメイションを免れ得ないからである。
今や「道」が直面する変容課題は、 self driving car への対応である。
道のありよう、とりわけ坂はますますその傾斜を減じ、姿形を転じていかざるをえないのある。
