ビックリ本『土地の記憶から読み解く　早稲田　江戸・東京のなかの小宇宙』 その1

ポピュリズムというよりウケがすべて、ウケ狙いだけの風潮が膨満している。
いつからこのように「世間」が退化してしまったのか。

テレビも家にはおかないし見ない、大概の新刊書店には立ち寄る気にもならない。
「隠れて、生きよ」というエピクロスの言がしっくり来る。
あまりにも愚かしい列島政治や市井の動向に棹を挿すつもりはない。
しかし仕事柄調べごとは常に生じる。
アマゾンでのモノ買いは避けているし、そもそも買う金がないので、勢い図書館に赴くことになる。

しかしそこで吃驚しあるいはげんなりし、もしくは神経を逆なでる「新刊本」に出逢うこともある。上掲書はその例で、今年の3月に出たばかり、230ページほどの小型本だが約3000円もする。
著者はヴェネツィアのカ・フォスカリ大教授ローザ・カーロリなる人物で1960年生まれという。日本近現代史、沖縄史、江戸・東京の都市史を専攻するらしいのだが、何気なくページを開いて驚いたのは下の図とそれに付されたキャプションである。

キャプションには、「古神田川の流路変遷の概念図。ウェブサイト「神田川逍遥（http://www.kanda-gawa.com/pp004.html）」を参考に作成。（上）は、太田道灌が江戸に入城する前の図〔略〕。（中）道灌は以前の流れを隅田川に直接流すように改めた。〔略〕。（下）徳川幕府の時代になると、神田川を江戸城の外堀として機能させるため、現在の飯田橋付近から東流するように改めた」と書いているのである。

イタリアの大学教授も「ウェブサイトを根拠に本を書く」というトンデモ・ビックリがひとつ。
もうひとつは、またしても「太田道灌」説が学問めかして拡散されていることに対するげんなり感である。
そのウェブサイトは「太田道灌が（平川の流れを）改めた」の「典拠」をどこにも示してはいない。

平川の流路変遷については、1914年『東京市史稿　市街篇第貳』（a）、１935年菊池山哉（b）、1978年鈴木理生（c)、1988年以降鈴木理生（d）、2012・13年岡本哲志（e）の5説があり、そのうちのcとeが太田道灌が行ったとしている。
このあたりの詳細は拙文（「平川」『地図中心』2012年7月、他）を参照していただくとして、a～e説のいずれも確たる根拠があるわけではなく、推論、臆測あるいは蓋然性の域を出ないのである。

しかしcやeはそれぞれ複数の「本」で喧伝され、それがまた道灌伝説の一翼として読みやすく、広く出回ったため、ウェブサイトもそれを受売りしたものだろう。それぞれの「本」は仮定や臆測を重ねて「断言」し、図まで示したのである。
エッセイならいざ知らず、このような手法はおよそ「学」とは無関係である。
証明されないことは正直に示す、蓋然性はその限界を示すのが学問であろう。

早稲田は半世紀前の一時期我が生を託した場所である。
それを「読み解いた」本があるなら見てみたいとも思うが、この図とそのキャプションを目にした途端その気は失せた。
「お里が知れる」というのは、このようなことを言う。
学問めかしたウケ狙いが、またぞろ屋上屋を架したのである。

ビックリ本は今にはじまったことではない。
「アースダイビング」も「スリバチクラブ」も、その立論のもっとも土台となる部位からして虚偽なのだが、ウケ狙いが当たったものだから世にはばかるのである。
