『武蔵野』の古地図　その2

国木田独歩が見た古地図について報じたメディアの嚆矢は、1965年6月21日の「朝日新聞」東京版と思われる。
「文学散歩」シリーズの執筆者として知られる野田宇太郎氏の談話が主体で、同年8月9日の「日経新聞」（夕刊）にはその考証を主体とした簡略記事が掲載されている。

逆に、もっとも近年の出版物は、2009年3月に刊行された『小金井市史　資料編　小金井桜』で、その80‐81ページに小金井市教育委員会が所蔵する「東都近郊図」（文政8年）を紹介し、「解説文の「武蔵野ノ跡ハ今纔ニ入間郡ニ残レリ」は国木田独歩が『武蔵野』の冒頭で引用する有名な文章である。」と記している。
この「東都近郊図」の現物は、十数年前小金井市の「浴恩館」跡の資料館（現小金井市文化財センター）に展示してあり、「独歩の地図」と気付いた時のちょっとした興奮はいまも思い出される。今回その刊行年を確認しに出向いたところ、展示替えで見ることができなかった。そのため文化財センターの展示担当者に問い合わせた結果、小金井市史の記載も併せて回答があったのである。

新聞報道と市史の間に位置して、『武蔵野』の古地図についてもっとも詳細な発表物は、雑誌『地理』1978年11月号に当時獨協大学教授であった井荻村生まれ東京文理科大学（後の東京教育大学）系の地理学者矢嶋仁吉（やじまにきち）が書いた「国木田独歩の『武蔵野』と文政版『東都近郊図』について」（pp.33-44）である。

こうした情報を下地にしたのであろう、学研の大型ビジュアルシリーズ「明治の古典」は、その第7巻『武蔵野　平凡』（1982年、篠田一志編）の16‐17ページにカラー図版「東都近郊図」を掲げ、「「武蔵野」の冒頭にでてくる文政年間発行の地図「東都図（ﾏﾏ）」（部分）。文政八年乙酉上梓、同十三年庚寅改正とある。（国立国会図書館蔵）」とキャプションを付した。

「さだかには確認されていない」どころではないのである。
